“Super SUS” is a true crime podcast hosted by Ande Breunig and me (Amethyst Cannady). We share a passion for overlooked mysteries and unsolved cases, and each episode brings one of those stories to light. In two years, the show has passed 55.1k downloads, and our most downloaded episode has reached 13k. You can find it on all major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

A bi-monthly podcast takes a lot more than recording a conversation. Someone has to set up the equipment, edit the audio, build a website, get every episode onto the major directories, write the content around each episode, promote it and find a way to pay for it. I took on the operations side of the show, and the sections below cover how I handled each of those.

Website and Hosting

I designed and launched the podcast’s website on Squarespace. The site is a clean, easy-to-use home for “Super SUS” and gives listeners one place to find everything.

For hosting and distribution, I chose Buzzsprout for its reliability and wide reach. It makes uploads simple and automatically sends every episode to the platforms listeners already use. This setup was built for growth.

Content and Promotion

I manage the podcast’s written and visual assets and promote every episode. I write a detailed blog post for each one that gives the audience a closer look at the mysteries we discuss, and I run email campaigns and social media that highlight compelling moments, behind-the-scenes activity and previews of what’s ahead.

The social campaigns performed well from the start. In the few months after the October 2024 launch, the Facebook posts I created reached 63.5k users, with 1.1k interactions and 2.5k link clicks. Instagram reached 11.9k, with nearly 26k views, 927 interactions and 792 link clicks. That early momentum helped build the audience behind today’s download numbers.

Podcast Production

The high production quality of “Super SUS” comes from close attention to detail. From day one, I researched and invested in the best equipment, including microphones and editing software, and set up a professional recording station in my co-host’s basement. Each week, I handle recording with Rode Connect and edit episodes in Descript and Adobe Audition to deliver clean, crisp audio.

I also manage the post-production workflow, scheduling episodes for release on Buzzsprout and Patreon. I care about audio clarity and polish because a professional listening experience is a big part of the podcast’s reputation for quality.

Marketing and Promotion

I oversaw the podcast’s monetization, securing affiliate partnerships and ad placements that fit the interests of the “Super SUS” audience. I worked with brands like Descript, Motion, 1Password and Audible, recording pre-roll and mid-roll ads that brought in revenue and featured tools listeners could actually use. I kept a balance between authenticity and monetization, which gave the podcast a solid foundation to keep growing.

I’m involved in every part of “Super SUS,” from blog posts and email campaigns to editing and promotion. Working behind the scenes has expanded both my creative and technical skills, and it’s helped build a growing community of curiosity-seekers and true crime fans.
